Alpo is an American brand of dog food manufactured by Nestle Purina and comes in canned and soft food, as well as dry kibble.  Alpo, which is an abbreviation of Allen Products was founded in 1936 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. In 1964, Allen Products was acquired by Liggett & Myers Tobacco, which was acquired by Grand Metropolitan in 1980;  in 1995, Nestle acquired Alpo Petfoods from Grand Metropolitan.

Lorne Green and Ed McMahon endorsed Alpo in commercials, claiming Alpo was so good they fed it to their own dogs. In the 1990’s, Garfield was the spokescat for Alpo. Alpo was the sponsor of the debut broadcast of 60 Minutes.

Alpo’s marketing campaign targets owner of real dogs, with the tag line “Real Dogs Eat Meat.”
